Millions of Americans are now eligible for discounted internet service thanks to a new federal program.
On Monday (May 9) President Joe Biden announced that 20 internet service providers agreed to offer lower costs and higher speeds for families with low incomes, veterans, and more through the American Connectivity Program.
According to the White House's announcement, an estimated 48 million households will qualify for the program which offers a $30 a month plan for high-speed internet and a $75 a month plan on tribal lands. Families with incomes at or less than 200% of the federal poverty level and people already enrolled in several government programs are eligible to receive the discounted internet service, the White House said.
Those programs include Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, Federal Pell Grants, Federal Public Housing Assistance, and more.
The offered speeds of 100 megabits per second are "fast enough for a typical family of four to work from home, do schoolwork, browse the web, and stream high-definition shows and movies," the White House said. "In addition, the Administration asked providers to offer such plans with no fees and no data caps."
To assist in getting families signed up for the American Connectivity Program, the government has launched a website.
