Another Suspect Charged In Plot To Kidnap Michigan Governor

Authorities have charged another person for their alleged involvement in a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and storm Michigan's Capitol building. That brings the total number of people charged in the scheme to 14.

Federal charges were filed against who six men who were allegedly planning to kidnap Whitmer, while seven others were hit with state charges of providing material support for terrorist acts and possession of a firearm while committing a felony. Ryan Jarvi, spokesman for Attorney General Dana Nesseldid not provide details about the latest person to face charges.

The seven men facing state charges were linked to a paramilitary group called the Wolverine Watchmen and had reportedly conducted surveillance at Whitmer's summer home. They were allegedly training to attack the Capitol in Lansing, hoping their acts of violence would spark a civil war.

Officials said then men were unhappy with Whitmer's strict lockdown measures in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The group also discussed plans to kidnap Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.

The FBI unraveled the plot using undercover agents, confidential sources, and covert recordings. Agents have over 100 hours of audio recordings of the men allegedly discussing their plans to kidnap Whitmer and stage an attack in Lansing.
