Agent Rich Paul and NBA Champion Anthony Davis woke up much richer men this morning. With the help of Paul, Davis is working to finalize a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $190 million. The deal will include an early termination option in 2025.
The new deal comes just months after the Chicago native won his first title with the Los Angeles Lakers. Davis averaged 28 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists as the Lakers defeated the Miami Heat in a six game series. Heading into the 2020-2021 NBA Season, Davis and company are poised to compete for the 2021 NBA title.
The signing of Anthony Davis is just the latest move for the reigning NBA Champions. Yesterday, NBA Finals MVP LeBron James signed a two-year $85 million extension with the team. Wesley Matthews, Marc Gasol, Dennis Schroeder and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell have joined the team as well.
"We don't just look at this at all as a one- or two-year window," Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka said.
"We want to stay competitive for the long term and make decisions that allow us to do just that and not just shoot all of our bullets to try and defend for one year. We want to be in a position of being a sustainable contender."
Davis, James and the crew are set to return to the court later this month. The Lakers will take on their crosstown rival Los Angeles Clippers on December 22. Three days later, they'll take the court for a primetime matchup against the Dallas Mavericks.
