Warner Bros. and DC are preparing to put out another Superman film in the near future and they have already gotten off to a fast start. Emmy Award-winning director JJ Abrams has already been tapped to executive produce the film and best-selling author Ta-Nehisi Coates has agreed to write the script.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates told Shadow & Act in February.
“I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”
Warner Bros. and DC are not stopping there. The two entertainment powers are looking to have a Black actor usher in the next era of Superman films. Early reports suggested that Michael B. Jordan could be in line to take on the role. However, he quickly shot down those rumors.
“I’m flattered that people have me in that conversation,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s definitely a compliment, but I’m just watching on this one.”
Adding to their search, Warner Bros. and DC are also looking for a Black director to lead the film. Names like Steven Caple Jr., Shaka King, Barry Jenkins and Regina King have been considered, but nothing has been finalized. Regardless of who Warner Bros. and DC select to lead the film in front of and behind the camera, it will be the first time a Black writer, Black director and Black actor have spearheaded a Superman film.
While DC and Warner Bros. sort out the details of that major release, they'll also release another summer blockbuster. Pete Davidson, Jared Leto, Idris Elba and Margot Robbie are set to star in The Suicide Squad. It's set to debut in theaters and on HBO Max in August.
