A fraternity and sorority were suspended at a Missouri university after several members were accused of using racial slurs and throwing raw eggs inside a dining hall. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Washington University officials suspended Alpha Phi and Kappa Sigma following an incident on March 21.
Witnesses claim the students were loud, climbed on top of tables, used racial language, and slung eggs inside the Bear's Den dining hall, which is located inside a dormitory on campus. The university's Association of Black Students said the dining hall employees working that night were mostly racial minorities.
Now the group is calling for the two organizations to get booted off campus and to expel the students involved.
“Myself and other students, we talked to the dining workers,” Taylor Robinson, the association president, told reporters. “They serve us food, they ask us how we are and we care about what happened to them. We could not believe that it was true.”
David Cook, the president of the local food workers union, told reporters the students didn't aim the racial slurs or eggs at the employees. He did note the staff felt "intimidated and uncomfortable" during the uproar.
“There need to be repercussions to show that this will not be tolerated,” Cook said.
Robinson said the university officials have met with them and are investigating the egging.
Neither Alpha Phi nor Kappa Sigma responded to the Post-Dispatch's requests for comment.
