Kentucky's Only Black Female Legislator Arrested At Breonna Taylor Protest

Kentucky State Rep. Attica Scott was arrested during a protest in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday night. Scott was arrested near First Unitarian Church and the Louisville Free Public Library along with a handful of demonstrators. Shortly thereafter, she was charged with first-degree rioting and two misdemeanors for failure to disperse and unlawful assembly.

At the moment, Scott is the only Black woman working in state legislator. She is best known for writing Breonna's Law, legislature that would eliminate no-knock warrants across the state.

Scott is one of more than 150 people arrested in Louisville over the last 48 hours. Interim police chief Robert Schroeder reported that 124 people were arrested on Wednesday. Yesterday, the department posted on Facebook that 24 more people had been arrested on Thursday.

The massive uptick in arrests comes hours after the state declined to directly charge any officer with the death of Breonna Taylor. Instead, former Louisville Metro Police Department officer Brett Hankinson was charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for firing shots that landed in nearby apartments.

The findings of the grand jury deeply upset and angered many across the country including LeBron James, Common and Oprah Winfrey. Among those upset by Wednesday's findings was Rep. Attica Scott.

During an interview with NPR, Scott said that justice "is hardly ever served when it’s police officers murdering Black people.”

“Our call to action is to continue to make sure that the city of Louisville understands that we will not go away, that we will continue to demand the defunding of police and the dismantling of this police department because it’s corrupt from the inside out, from the bottom to the top.”

At this time, it is unclear if Scott is currently in police custody or is she has been released on bail.
