NAACP Announces Election Protection Plan For Election Day

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced Friday (October 30) the launch of their Election Day voting rights protection plan in Michigan and across the country.

As the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, the NAACP is no stranger to springing into action around election time.

Michigan NAACP President Yvonne White stated, “The right to vote is a fundamental right under the United States Constitution. It is a right that millions of people have fought to protect and preserve...any interference or intimidation with a citizen’s right to cast their ballot is illegal and will not be tolerated.”

The NAACP created the Election Protection Team made up of trained poll watchers and election challengers who will be monitoring polling sites for instances of voter suppression and other violations that might inhibit Black and other voters of color from getting their ballots in or counted.

Command centers have been installed in key districts around Michigan and organization leaders in the state say their workers are prepared to work all night. Centers will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time. You can check the location and contact information of the Michigan Command Centers here

Voters outside of Michigan who experience trouble getting their ballots in are urged to call the Voter Hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683). The NAACP says that volunteers will be working the hotline throughout Election Day to provide support and legal assistance.
