Michael B. Jordan Is Launching A HBCU Basketball Tournament In 2021

Thirty-three-year-old Creed actor Michael B. Jordan announced he's launching a HBCU basketball showcase.

The Hoop Dreams Classic will be a one-day tournament featuring four teams from the top Division I HBCU men’s and women’s basketball teams.

The event is set to take place at the Prudential Center in Jordan’s hometown of Newark, New Jersey on December 18, 2021.

On why he started the event, the actor told Forbes, “This past year has been the tipping point for so many, including myself, in revving up support for Black people. As a Newark native, I am committed to bringing change to the community and am honored to be able to present The Hoop Dreams Classic as a way to celebrate the value of community, education, and Black college experiences.”

Part of the tournament’s proceeds will be donated to HBCUs and the local Newark community.

The event is slated to also have a battle of the bands, live performances, a film festive, culinary events, alongside college and career opportunities, as reported by PEOPLE

“Through our shared love of basketball, I look forward to bringing the communal spirit of HBCUs to the city that helped shape me into the man I am today,” the actor stated.
