Democrats Begin Lobbying For First Black Woman To Sit On Supreme Court

Democrats are reportedly working to get the first Black woman appointed to the US Supreme Court, a promise President Joe Biden made on his campaign trail.

South Carolina Judge Michelle Childs is reportedly top House Democrats’ favorite to be appointed to the nation’s highest court, in anticipation of a vacant seat.

Judge Stephen Breyer is 82 years old and is one of three liberal judges on the current bench. If he were to step down, the open seat would allow the Biden administration to get a Supreme Court pick during his first term.

According to The New York Times, Jim Clyburn, a South Carolina native and the highest-ranking African American in Congress, is advocating for Judge Childs.

Judge Childs, 54, is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. She was appointed to the US District Court of South Carolina by President Barack Obama in 2009 and confirmed by the US Senate in 2010.

She has experience working as the state’s Workers’ Compensation Commissioner and Deputy Director of the South Carolina Division of Labor.

Judge Childs reportedly has support from members of the Congressional Black Caucus and fellow Judge Leslie Abrams, who is a Federal District Court judge in Georgia, and the younger sister of voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams
