A Texas woman says she was trying to get to a hospital on Sunday (May 23) when an off-duty police officer shot her. “I did a U-turn in the middle of the street because I was going to go to the hospital,” Lecresha Murray told KWTX News. “I started feeling sick.”
Murray says she made the U-turn in front of the Copperas Cove officer’s car which led to an argument and the shooting. Other officers arrived at the scene after receiving multiple reports of a shooting and discovered the off-duty officer was involved.
According to Murray’s account of the incident, she and the officer were racing past each other in their cars before Murray finally stopped and got out to confront the man. She said during the argument, she was holding her side due to the pain she was in and the man pulled out a gun.
“When I turned around to run back to my truck and get out of there, I just heard pop pop pop pop and all I could do was bend over and duck,” Murray told the outlet. She said the man didn’t identify himself as a police officer until he started firing his weapon.
She was later taken to a medical center to get treated for non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
Residents of a nearby neighborhood where the incident took place told the news outlet that the normally quiet community was shocked to hear the gunfire.
“We were not going to have that in this neighborhood because this neighborhood is quiet and cohesive and we were not going to have this mess,” an unidentified resident said. Following the gunshots, some residents called 911 and others called for the man to put his weapon down.
“If the guy with the gun tried to run, he wasn’t going [anywhere] because the whole neighborhood would have tackled him because we were all out here,” a resident said. Murray was released from the hospital and returned to the scene of the incident.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation of the shooting.
