Dr. Fauci And Rand Paul Face Off Over COVID-19, Again

Dr. Anthony Fauci had a direct message to Kentucky Senator Rand Paul on Tuesday (July 20).

“You do not know what you are talking about,” the nation’s top infectious disease expert told Paul during a hearing on the COVID-19 pandemic. “I want to say that officially. You do not know what you are talking about, OK?” Fauci continued.

The two exchanged words during the Select Subcommittee on Coronavirus Crisis hearing –– where they first clashed back in May–– over the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Using a 2017 scientific paper, Paul again asserted that the virus originated in China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, though that theory has not been completely accepted by scientists and researchers. During their first heated exchange, Fauci told Paul he was “entirely and completely incorrect” about the origins of the COVID-19 virus.

“You’re trying to obscure responsibility for four million people around the world dying from a pandemic,” Paul said to Fauci this week.

The senator misinterpreted the scientific paper he used as evidence, Fauci attempted to explain.

“I want everyone to understand that if you look at the those viruses [in the paper], and that’s judged by qualified virologists and evolutionary biologists, those viruses are molecularly impossible to result in SARS-CoV-2,” Fauci said.

“You are implying that what we did was responsible for the deaths of individuals. I totally resent that, and if anybody is lying here, senator, it is you.”

The senator used the heated moment to fundraise on Twitter, including a two-minute clip of his words to Fauci, but none of Fauci’s response.

Researchers from the World Health Organizations are currently investigating the origins of the COVID-19-causing virus, though it could be years before a conclusion is made.
