Last Missing Victim In Miami Condo Collapse Identified

Officials have identified the last missing victim from the Champlain Towers South building collapse on Monday, according to CNN.

Estelle Hedaya was the remaining victim of the Surfside, Florida tragedy, bringing the month-long search to a close.

“It was obviously tough to hear directly, but I can definitely see and feel the sense of relief [my parents] got knowing my sister can rest in peace,” Ikey Hedaya, Estelle’s brother, told CNN. “This month has been excruciating to say the least.”

On June 24, part of the 12-story beachfront condominium building suddenly collapse in the middle of the night, leaving 98 dead and the Surfside community heartbroken.

Search crews combed through the debris, only being stopped by dangerous weather conditions and the threat of further collapse of the structure. What remains of the building has since been demolished, and officials ended the search for bodies on July 23.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the 98 victims had been identified and 242 people are accounted for.

“Nothing, we can say or do will bring back these 90 angels who left behind grieving families, beloved friends, loved ones across this community and across the world,” Levine Cava said. “But we have done everything possible to bring closure to the families, and I am especially proud that through these tireless efforts, we were able, at last, to bring closure to all those who reported missing loved ones.”

Now authorities are focusing on the investigation of the collapse. Lawsuits are also underway from victims who lost family members and property.

Documents from the Florida State Board of Architecture recently revealed that the architect behind the Champlain Towers South was previously suspended before working on the now-destroyed building.
