A group of Louisiana state lawmakers will investigate the death of Ronald Greene, who died in state police custody in May 2019.

According to reports, the special select state house committee will be reviewing "who knew what and when" during the two years in between Greene's killing and the release of the body camera footage of the fatal incident.

Speaker Clay Schexnayder announced the news of the special committee a week after Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards responded to an article by The Associated Press that alleged he knew about what happened the night Greene died, but didn't say anything for two years.

Edwards denied the claims in a statement, saying he welcomes "any and all legislative oversight" into Greene's death.

"I am hopeful that the outcome of this investigation, which has been pending for more than two years, will provide answers and justice for the Green family," Edwards, who is a Democrat, said.

Greene died May 10, 2019 at the age 49, after what police described as resisting arrest. Greene's family said they were told he died in a car crash during a high speed chase with officers. Two years after the incident, graphic body camera footage showed officers repeatedly tasing, kicking and punching Greene

In addition to investigating Greene's killing, the committee is focused on the handling of the initial investigation after Greene's death.

"I look to the committee to provide answers to questions regarding the incident and its handling that would assist members, the family, and the public in understanding what happened and help the state move forward," Schexnayder said.
