Being at a Beyoncé concert is already a memorable experience, now imagine the superstar asking her to sing with you. That is exactly what happened to 13 year old Sophie Kotkis who attended her show in Perth, Australia. The superstar paused the show to give Sophie the spotlight, the 13yr old happens to also be legally blind and suffers from other disabilities.
“I have a very special young lady here,” Beyoncé says in the video above to a crowd of 15,000. “Tell everybody your name, beautiful.”
“Sophie,” the girl responds, grinning.
“Sophie, I think I need you to help me sing this song,” Beyoncé continues. “Do you think you can sing ‘To the left, to the left’?”
Sophia helped Beyonce sing one of her favorite songs irreplaceable, a crowd favorite. The fans all cheered her on as thy both
Sophie’s older sister, Ellie, had arranged the special moment months in advance with a video appeal sent to Beyoncé. “She’s never really been able to go to a concert due to logistical reasons so I made a video about Sophie,” Ellie told Perth News. “Even with everything that she’s been through, she’s been able to do so much. She raised over $1,000 for people with multiple sclerosis. … I put that all in the video and I just said that I think someone as amazing as Sophie deserves to meet someone as amazing as you [Beyoncé].”
All of this was thanks to a family friend who works with the Children's hospital and forwarded the request to the stars manager.
Even with the prior planning, the moment was still a surprise for Sophie. “She had no idea that she was going to sing with her,” Ellie said. “It was so important for me because there’s been a lot of things in life that Sophie hasn’t been able to do, but she loves music, loves to dance and loves to sing and this was just something for me to show the world how amazing she is … She’s still on cloud nine today.” As for Sophie, the 13-year-old now has some pretty rare bragging rights: “I told my mum that I got a kiss from Beyoncé.”
