Kamala Harris Calls Out States "Attacking" LGBTQ+ People At Pride Event

Vice President Kamala Harris made another historic appearance at Capitol Pride in Washington, People reports.

On Sunday (June 12), Harris took the stage at Washington's pride event alongside her husband Doug Emhoff and Rupaul's Drag Race winner Symone. She again made history as the only sitting vice president to ever attend a pride event following last year's appearance.

"No one should fear going to a nightclub for fear that a terrorist might try to take them down," Harris said on Sunday, which marked six years since the Orlando nightclub shooting that left 49 dead.

"No one should fear going to a Pride celebration because of a white supremacist," she added on the heels of the arrest of 31 people in Idaho for conspiracy to riot at a Coeur d'Alene Pride parade.

"No one should fear loving who they love," Harris continued. "Our children in Texas and Florida should not fear who they are."

Harris' strong statements of support come as the GOP continues to target LGBTQ+ rights.

Earlier this year, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott paralleled gender-affirming surgeries for transgender kids to "child abuse." Last week, Texas Rep. Bryan Slaton announced a new bill aimed at prohibiting minors from watching drag shows.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the "Don't Say Gay" bill, which will ban educators from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with students in kindergarten through third grade. Other Republican-led states are looking to follow in DeSantis' footsteps by enacting similar measures.

Harris said on Sunday, "We should not have to be dealing with 300 laws in states around our country that are attacking our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters."

She concluded her statements urging for change, "So, we know what we stand for and therefore we know what we will fight for."
