A family is searching for answers after an elderly couple was shot to death in their Florida home, PEOPLE reports.

Major Melvin, 89, and Claudette Melvin, 87, a married couple of 60 years, were found fatally shot inside their home on March 22, according to Fort Lauderdale police.

Police believe the suspect(s) fled the shooting in the Melvins' car, a red 2014 Ford Fusion. Authorities are seeking the public's help in searching for the vehicle as it remains missing.

“We’re looking at several leads right now,” Fort Lauderdale Police Sgt. Donald Geiger said in a statement. “It’s very distinct that it has side damage on the left driver’s side, rear door, and we also have some damage on the right rear bumper.”

Questions surround why the Melvins were targeted.

"I'm so numb I can’t feel,” Kim Melvin Hill, one of the couple's 11 children, said. “Yes, we are angry, we are very angry. We are still trying to wrap our minds about how can we? Who would? Who did? Why? So we ask those questions.”

“They were the most loving people that I’ve ever known. Both caring and whoever this perpetrator is, he just needs to be found," Tonya Mitchell, another daughter, added.

Mitchell said the suspect(s) left her mother's purse and other valuables behind.

As of Wednesday (April 3), no arrests were made in the shooting.

The couple had 28 grandchildren, one of whom started a GoFundMe to help the family.

Anyone with information on the case should call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
