The NAACP is calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office — marking the first time in the organization’s history it has urged the use of the 25th Amendment.
In a statement released Tuesday (April 7), the NAACP said Trump’s recent rhetoric and actions have raised serious concerns about his ability to serve, warning that the situation has become a matter of national security.
“This president is unfit, unwell, and unhinged,” NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said in the statement. “The rhetoric and behavior we are witnessing from Trump isn’t just alarming, it’s dangerous.”
The organization pointed to what it described as “erratic statements and actions” in recent weeks, including a social media post over Easter weekend that drew widespread concern, and said the current moment demands urgent action from the vice president and Cabinet.
The 25th Amendment allows for a president to be removed from power if they are deemed unable to carry out the duties of the office.
The call comes at a volatile moment on the global stage.
Tuesday evening, less than 24 hours after warning that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” Trump announced a 14-day ceasefire with Iran, saying a “workable” plan had been presented to de-escalate the nearly six-week conflict.
For the NAACP, that kind of rapid shift is part of the concern. The organization said a president who is unable to act with stability or clarity could jeopardize military readiness and public trust, especially during moments of international conflict.
“This is not merely a matter of political disagreement,” the statement said. “It is a matter of national security, global stability, and the very fabric of our democracy.”
The NAACP also emphasized that its position is rooted in protecting the safety of Americans, calling on national leaders to act decisively.
“Our democracy, our armed forces, and the safety of our citizens depend on decisive action now,” the organization said.
The White House has not publicly responded to the NAACP’s statement.
Trump, meanwhile, has framed the ceasefire as a step toward a broader agreement, writing on social media that the U.S. has “met and exceeded all military objectives” and is moving toward “longterm PEACE with Iran.”
