Former Vice President Kamala Harris called President Donald Trump a “mob boss” during a speech at the Michigan Democratic Women's Caucus Luncheon in Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday (April 18), according to Newsweek

Harris, a keynote speaker at the event and a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, claimed in her speech that Trump’s dismissal of international standards such as sovereignty and territorial integrity is making the U.S. seem "unreliable" in the eyes of its allies.

"He has eroded whatever influence we had to be able to speak to certain issues, imperfect though we know we have been,” she said. “The man does not understand what real strength looks like any overcompensates full-time. Trying to pretend that basically he is some kind of mob boss."

Harris further referred to the Trump administration as “the most corrupt, callous, and incompetent presidential administration in the history of the United States,” and criticized the president for his approach to the ongoing war in Iran and rising gas prices resulting from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

“He entered a war, got pulled into it by [Israeli Prime Minister] Bibi Netanyahu, let's be clear about that," she said. "Entered the war that the American people do not want, putting at risk American service members, and among the many consequences of it included jacking up the cost of gas.”

As of April 17, 2026, the national U.S average price for gas is $4.06/gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Talks between the U.S. and Iran are still expected to go through on Tuesday (April 21), the day before the two-week ceasefire deadline, according to The Associated Press. This comes despite the U.S. attacking an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel it claimed tried to evade its blockade.
