Trump Suggests Hakeem Jeffries Be Impeached — Even Though He Can’t Be

In a Truth Social post shared Sunday (May 3), President Donald Trump suggested that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries be impeached — even though that is impossible under the Constitution.

“Hakeem Jeffries, a Low-IQ individual, said our Supreme Court is ‘illegitimate.’ After saying such a thing, isn’t he subject to Impeachment?” Trump wrote

However, according to Article I, Section 5, Clause 2 of the Constitution, members of Congress cannot be impeached. They can be expelled only by a two-thirds vote in their respective chamber.

Impeachment is a process that applies only to the President and Vice President, and “all civil Officers of the United States,” which historically has included members of the Cabinet and federal judges

Jeffries called the Supreme Court “illegitimate” in a statement reacting to the Louisiana redistricting decision last week.

On April 29, the Supreme Court struck down a majority-Black congressional district proposal in Louisiana that weakened protections for Black voters granted under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, according to The Associated Press.

Jeffries was among several lawmakers who spoke out against the ruling, which comes after Trump ordered Republican-led states last year to redraw district lines to favor the party in the lead-up to this year’s midterms.

“Today’s decision by this illegitimate Supreme Court majority strikes a blow against the Voting Rights Act and is designed to undermine the ability of communities of color all across this country to elect their candidate of choice,” Jeffries wrote. “The extremists have completely and totally failed America. So they’ve concluded, aided and abetted by the Trump Court, that they have to cheat to win.”

This is not the first time Trump has referred to Jeffries as a “low-IQ individual,” a phrase he has used in the past to refer predominantly to women and people of color, such as Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas.

Trump also used the term in a Truth Social post on April 21 after he spoke out against Trump’s approach to the war in Iran.

“Never allow the Traitor Democrats like Low IQ person Hakeem Jeffries, or Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, or the totally corrupt Fake News Media such as the phony and decaying Wall Street Journal, the Failing New York Times (Subscriptions way down!), or dying “60 Minutes,” to demean or criticize Operation Midnight Hammer, which totally obliterated the Nuclear Dust locations to the point where bloodthirsty Iran has been unable to get to it, or dig it out,” Trump wrote.

Jeffries called the post an “extraordinary insult” during an interview on MS NOW’s Lawrence O’Donnell in April.
