Trump's Obama Photo Comparison Backfires: 'You Coward'

President Donald Trump posted a side-by-side photo Saturday (June 27) comparing himself at a young age to former President Barack Obama. Within hours, the comparison had completely flipped on him.

The Truth Social post showed Trump in his New York Military Academy uniform next to a photo of a young Obama in a Panama hat, holding a cigarette, taken during his freshman year at Occidental College. Trump labeled the photos "D. Trump, 20" and "B. H. Obama, 18" — but the image of Trump was actually his 1964 high school yearbook photo, taken when he was 17.

Trump's own niece, Mary Trump, pointed out the error directly on X: "This is a picture of Donald when he was a teenager in high school. You'd think he'd know that."

The comparison didn't land the way Trump intended.

Commentator Adam Mockler said Obama was "aura mogging" Trump in the photos — internet slang for one person's presence completely overshadowing another's.

Former Obama aide and "Pod Save America" co-host Tommy Vietor put it more bluntly: "Curious what the messaging goal is here. One guy looks like a good hang while other looks like he would've been fragged by his unit in Vietnam (if he hadn't gotten five deferments)."

Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger went further, accusing Trump of using the military uniform photo to falsely suggest he'd served: "You were not in the military despite you constantly posting this picture you coward pu**y."

Then things escalated. One widely shared response paired photos of both men in middle age instead — Obama at 46 campaigning for president in 2008, next to Trump at roughly the same age standing beside his former friend, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

"Obama Derangement Syndrome," one user wrote in response, flipping Trump's own "Trump Derangement Syndrome" label back on him.

Pete Souza, who served as Obama's chief official White House photographer, joined the pile-on directly. He posted his own side-by-side: a photo of Obama at 47 shaking hands and posing with everyday Americans on the campaign trail, next to a photo of Trump at 47 standing close to Epstein. Souza's caption read simply: "Swipe if you dare."

The post has drawn tens of thousands of likes, with commenters calling it everything from "President v. Predator" to "a total eclipse."

The timing made the moment land even harder. Just days earlier, Obama appeared on the "All The Smoke" podcast and addressed Trump's fixation on him directly, calling it "strange."

"The idea that I'd be worrying about somebody who came before and me trying to measure like, 'What's he done today?' Constantly worrying about that is a strange thing to me," Obama said. "It shows me somebody who is not focused on the American people and the job they're supposed to do."
