Hillman College is getting a new class.
Netflix released the first trailer Monday (August 17) for its upcoming A Different World sequel series, giving fans a closer look at the new generation of students heading to the fictional historically Black college.
The series follows Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at Hillman. Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah, who is trying to find her own identity while stepping into the same college world her parents once called home.
The new cast includes Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall and Kennedi Reece, who will join Moon as the latest students navigating life at Hillman.
The trailer also gives fans a glimpse at several familiar faces returning to Hillman, including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Debbie Allen and Jada Pinkett Smith. Other original cast members, including Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell, are also set to reprise their roles.
The original A Different World ran from 1987 to 1993 and became known for its portrayal of Black college life and its influence on viewers considering HBCUs. The new series hopes to introduce that Hillman experience to a new generation.
A Different World premieres September 24 on Netflix, exactly 39 years after the original series debuted.
