Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) filed new articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Monday (August 24), accusing him of abusing his presidential powers by allowing federal immigration agents to operate without accountability
In the resolution, Green accuses Trump of operating U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as “vicious, quota-driven, unaccountable paramilitary police forces,” alleging that federal immigration agents have assaulted civilians, carried out unjustified killings and operated with “anonymity and secrecy.”
The resolution specifically names Renée Good and Alex Pretti, who were U.S. citizens killed by federal immigration agents in Minnesota in January. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Houston in July, is also mentioned, as well as Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, who was killed by an agent in Maine just days later.
Green alleges Trump enabled the killings and subsequent cover-ups, while also accusing his administration of undermining free speech, civil liberties, judicial oversight and the separation of powers.
The longtime Democratic leader has repeatedly sought to impeach Trump, with Monday’s filing being his seventh time doing so, according to Green’s congressional website. He introduced three impeachment resolutions during Trump's first term and three more during Trump's second term before filing his latest resolution..
Trump has been impeached twice before. During his first term, the House impeached him in 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine and again in 2021 following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Senate acquitted him both times.Green’s latest resolution was referred to the House, where it faces long odds in the Republican-controlled chamber, and a majority would need to vote to impeach Trump. Green has acknowledged that he does not currently have the votes.
