The Trump administration has removed historical language from Arlington National Cemetery’s website and signage that criticized a Confederate memorial’s portrayal of slavery and the Confederacy, The Washington Post reported.
The bronze monument, which depicts Confederate soldiers alongside enslaved Black people, stood at Arlington for more than a century before it was removed in 2023 under a congressional mandate requiring Confederate symbols to be removed from U.S. military property. The Army plans to return the memorial to Arlington in 2027, according to the Post.
The memorial faced criticism for its depictions of enslaved people, including a Black woman carrying a white officer’s child and a Black man portrayed following his enslaver to war.
Before the recent changes, federal language described the sculpture as presenting a “nostalgic, mythologized vision of the Confederacy” and sanitizing slavery. It also explained how the Lost Cause narrative romanticized the pre-Civil War South and denied the realities of slavery, the Post reported.
That context has now been removed. The replacement marker no longer mentions slavery and instead says the Army expects to display the sculpture at the site in 2027 after conservation and refurbishment, according to the Post.
An Arlington National Cemetery spokesperson told The Washington Sun that the website and monument signage were updated to make the information “succinct, factual, current and objective.”
Historian Karen Cox told the Sun that the removed language was “absolutely accurate” historical context and said the Lost Cause narrative falsely reframes the Civil War as a fight over states’ rights rather than slavery.
Stephen West, a Catholic University historian, noticed the changes during a Sunday (September 6) visit to Arlington. He said the previous language accurately described the monument’s treatment of slavery and the Confederacy.
“I’m deeply disturbed by the removal of that language and by plans to restore the statue,” West told the Post.
