Three of George Floyd’s siblings are seeking a full accounting of the millions of dollars raised through a GoFundMe campaign created in his name following his death in 2020.
A Houston attorney sent a letter to Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, on behalf of siblings Zsazsa Floyd, LaTonya Floyd and Rodney Floyd, requesting financial records connected to the George Floyd Memorial GoFundMe, according to TMZ.
The August 11 letter says the fundraiser collected roughly $19 million. The siblings say they are among Floyd’s heirs and believe they are entitled to a portion of the money but have not received what they consider a fair share.
The family is requesting GoFundMe reports, financial statements, transaction histories, tax filings, and other records showing how the donations were handled and distributed.
The letter gave Philonise 20 days from the date he received it to provide the requested documents, with the family’s attorney saying she hoped the matter could be resolved amicably.
The siblings say they have repeatedly sought information about the fundraiser but have not received the documentation they requested. They also told TMZ they contacted attorney Ben Crump seeking answers but did not receive a response.
Rodney Floyd told TMZ, “We want to see the records, understand how decisions were made, and make sure the family’s questions are answered. We’re speaking up because transparency matters.”
The fundraiser received an enormous response after Floyd’s death. GoFundMe reported that the campaign received more than 500,000 donations and raised $14.7 million in 2020.
At the time, Philonise Floyd said the money would help cover funeral and burial expenses, counseling, travel connected to court proceedings, and other family needs. He also said a portion would go to Floyd’s estate to support his children and their education.
