Former NBA player J.R. Smith was arrested in Texas Monday (September 28) on a family violence assault charge.
TMZ reported that Smith was taken into custody after an automatic license plate reader alerted Royse City police to an active warrant.
Officers stopped the vehicle on Interstate 30 and confirmed the warrant issued by the Southlake Police Department.
Smith, whose legal name is Earl Joseph Smith III, was booked into the Hunt County Detention Center on a charge of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence, according to jail records.
Smith’s brother was reportedly in the vehicle during the traffic stop and took possession of the car after Smith was arrested. Police then transported Smith to the Hunt County Detention Center.
TMZ reported that as of Tuesday (September 29), Smith remains at the Hunt County Detention Center, and jail records show no bond has been set.
Authorities have not publicly released details about the alleged incident, including where it occurred, the identity of the alleged victim, Smith’s relationship to that person, or what injuries were reported.
Smith, 41, spent 16 seasons in the NBA and won championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
Smith has not publicly commented on the arrest.
