Netflix is renewing A Different World for a second season, just over a week after the sequel premiered.
Variety reported Friday (October 2) that the 10-episode series has been renewed following its September 24 debut on the streaming service.
The sequel follows Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), as she begins her first year at the fictional, historically Black Hillman College.
The series debuted at No. 4 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list with 4.2 million views during its first week, according to Variety. It also reached the Top 10 in 15 countries.
Creator and showrunner Felicia Pride said, “It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience. We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue telling meaningful, heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hardworking crew.”
Executive producer and director Debbie Allen also celebrated the renewal on social media. In an Instagram caption, she wrote, “Global Family, Season 2 is Coming! Y’all showed up and showed OUT for #ADifferentWorld! THANK YOU!!!!”
The sequel features a new generation of Hillman students while bringing back several original cast members, including Guy, Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell.
The original A Different World aired from 1987 to 1993 and centered on students at the fictional HBCU.
The sitcom became particularly influential in its portrayal of Black college life and helped introduce generations of viewers to HBCU culture.
Netflix has not announced a premiere date for Season 2.
