Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson declared “We are done with DEI at the FTC” in January 2025. Now, he is praising Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chair Andrea Lucas for protecting “white American men from discrimination.”
During a Thursday (October 8) press conference, Ferguson called Lucas the greatest leader of the EEOC since Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas chaired the agency in the 1980s.
“On every issue that previous EEOCs refused to touch: protecting white American men from discrimination, protecting American citizens from national origin discrimination ... she has led the EEOC headlong to defend Americans from these abusive practices,” Ferguson said, according to HuffPost.
In a January 22, 2025, post on X, Ferguson called diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) “a scourge on our institutions” and said the FTC would eliminate DEI offices, influence on hiring and programming.
Lucas has also encouraged white men to pursue workplace discrimination claims. In a social media video last year, she asked, “Are you a white male who has experienced discrimination at work based on your race or sex?”
She added, “You may have a claim to recover money under federal civil rights laws.”
Ferguson’s remarks come amid the Trump administration’s broader efforts to dismantle DEI initiatives and roll back programs designed to address racial disparities.
Since Trump began his second term, his administration has revoked affirmative action requirements for federal contractors and removed a clause explicitly prohibiting segregated facilities.
The Education Department launched investigations into more than 50 colleges over alleged discrimination against white and Asian American students. AT&T also pledged to dismantle its DEI programs amid pressure from the Federal Communications Commission.
This week, HUD opened an investigation into Wells Fargo over programs designed to increase Black homeownership.
