The NFL Players Association is demanding a full investigation into Jalen Hurts’ medical care as the NFL defends the Philadelphia Eagles’ handling of the quarterback’s blood clots.
According to ESPN, the NFL previously told the union it did not plan to review the care Hurts received. The NFLPA said a full investigation is necessary before conclusions are drawn about what happened.
“Determining the facts are essential to ensuring players receive the highest level of care and protection going forward,” the union said.
NFL Chief Medical Officer Allen Sills defended the league’s medical protocols, saying team physicians prioritize patients and do not take orders from coaches or team management. Sills called suggestions that outside factors influence medical decisions “nonsense.”
Shannon Sharpe criticized the NFL and Eagles over their handling of Hurts’ medical care on Nightcap with Unc and Ocho, the sports talk show he co-hosts with former NFL wide receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.
Sharpe acknowledged that the league helped him provide for his family but said the NFL and Eagles were wrong in this situation.
“I love the NFL. I love what it allowed me to do,” Sharpe said, emphasizing that the league helped pull his family out of poverty. But he added that his criticism still stands.
“They wrong in this situation. Ain’t no ifs, ands, and buts about it. They wrong in this situation. The Philadelphia Eagles, you’re wrong.”
As questions continue to swirl around Hurts’ medical care, his mother, Pamela Hurts, shared a message about gratitude on social media Tuesday (October 20).
In a video shared to social media, she encouraged viewers to appreciate their lives and what they have, saying, “Because your life could change at a blink of an eye.”
New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown, Hurts’ former Eagles teammate, also expressed support for the quarterback during a press conference Tuesday.
“It’s a tough situation. I got a lot of love and respect for him. I’m praying for him,” Brown said. “He’s a tough guy, and he can handle anything.”
