Republican Sen. Ashley Moody has defeated Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon in Florida’s U.S. Senate race Tuesday (November 3), keeping the seat in GOP hands and ending Nixon’s bid to become the state’s first Black U.S. senator, according to The Hill.
Moody was appointed to the Senate by Gov. Ron DeSantis in January 2025 after Marco Rubio resigned to become President Donald Trump’s secretary of state. Tuesday’s special election determined who would serve the remaining two years of former Rubio’s term.
Nixon, who hails from Jacksonville’s Moncrief neighborhood, emerged as a progressive populist candidate running against Alex Vindman, who became nationally known after testifying during Trump’s first impeachment proceedings in 2019.
Nixon defeated Vindman in the August Democratic primary, receiving 55.9% of the vote to his 44.1%, according to Ballotpedia. Despite Vindman raising significantly more money, Nixon secured the nomination with support from progressive voters and organizations.
During her Senate campaign, Nixon advocated for universal health care, expanded child care and a wealth tax on billionaires, according to her campaign website. She also criticized rising housing and health care costs, arguing that working families needed greater financial relief.
Moody, by contrast, promoted eliminating federal taxes on tips, overtime pay and Social Security benefits, according to News4JAX.
Moody, a former Florida attorney general, also made immigration enforcement and public safety central to her campaign. She has supported expanding the removal of immigrants with criminal records and increasing cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, according to WGCU News.
