Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms is projected to win Georgia’s gubernatorial race, defeating Republican Rick Jackson and flipping the governor’s office for the first time in 24 years, according to The New York Times.
Bottoms, who served as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022, is poised to make history as the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history. She also served as a senior adviser to former President Joe Biden.
Her victory flips Georgia's governor's office back to Democrats for the first time in 24 years, according to The Associated Press. The last Democrat to hold the office was Roy Barnes, who served from 1999 to 2003.
