Furthering Your Education: Five Scholarship Programs For HBCU Students

The cost of a college education is anything, but cheap in today's economy and the financial downturn of the COVID-19 pandemic has not made it any easier. As a result, more college students are looking for tuition assistance than ever. Luckily, there are more than 500 scholarship programs available to students at historically Black colleges and universities. Ranging from the United Negro College Fund to Morgan Stanley, there are millions of dollars available to students pursuing an education at an HBCU.

Call Me MiSTER

Location: Grambling, Louisiana

Open To: Grambling State University Students

Clemson University's Call Me MiSTER is working with students at Grambling State University students to increase the number of Black male teachers. Through the program, students at the historically Black university will have access to scholarships, academic coaching, and post-graduate mentorship.

“Clemson University is proud to partner with Grambling State University and their strong commitment to provide leadership in establishing a sustainable pipeline of Black male teachers to serve in Louisiana public schools," Call Me MiSTER Executive Director Roy Jones said.

The program is set to kick off this semester with a group of seven students at the university.

Netflix HBCU Bootcamp

Location: Norfolk, Virginia

Open To: Norfolk State University Graduates

Netflix has partnered with the educational platform, 2U, and Norfolk State University to launch the HBCU Virtual Bootcamp. Over the course of 16 weeks, Netflix professionals will work with recent Norfolk State University graduates to learn more about engineering, data, UX/UI teams and much more. In addition to training sessions, Norfolk State graduates will be paired with mentors to learn more trends in the industry, job hunting and more.

“The goal is for participants to come away better equipped with industry-relevant skills to enter today’s workforce and with valuable, long-lasting relationships,” Netflix's Kabi Gishuru said.

Applications are now available to Norfolk State graduates of the classes of 2019 and 2020.

Morgan Stanley HBCU Scholars

In the midst of the pandemic and a national reckoning on racial injustice, Morgan Stanley has committed $12 million to educational opportunities at historically Black colleges and universities. Through this commitment, the financial institution will provide five scholarships to students at Howard University, Spelman College and Morehouse College each year. Within the next four years, Morgan Stanley plans to have 60 students in their scholarship program.

“This talent pipeline starts with education, and supporting students as they prepare to enter the workforce, whatever their careers may be, is a key area of focus for the firm. We look forward to partnering closely with HBCU faculty and students to support rising talent in an effective and meaningful way.”

Applications for the Morgan Stanley sponsored program will open in fall 2021.

Apple HBCU Scholars

Apple has partnered with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to provide $15,000 grants to current undergraduate and graduate students at historically Black colleges and universities. In addition, selected scholars will participate in a 12-week internships next summer. Through this program, students will gain technical experience in the fields of computer science, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.

”Apple is committed to working alongside communities of color to advance educational equity,” Apple's Lisa Jackson said.
