A man in Florida was arrested and charged after attempting to carry out a murder-for-hire plot against his ex-girlfriend and two of her family members. The man, according to reports, planned to blame Black Lives Matter for their deaths.

The Washington Post reported that 51-year-old David Slater created a scheme to have his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend killed along with her sister and brother-in-law- who he blamed for ruining his relationship. He was going to pay a hired killer $400 to spray paint “Black Lives Matter” at the crime scene in an attempt to confuse investigators. The person Slater tried to hire was actually an undercover FBI agent.

Authorities began investigating Slater in February 2020 after discovering the body of 26-year-old Brianne Slabaugh in the Everglades National Park.

Slabaugh, police said, was hired by Slater to spy on his ex-girlfriend and kidnap and kill “multiple individuals associated with” her, prosecutors said in court in November 2020. After Slabaugh “couldn’t go through with the murder,” The Post reported her body was later found in the park.

An investigation into her death led authorities to an associate of Slater’s. The associate became an informant for the FBI and led Slater to the hired murderer, who was really an undercover FBI agent.

Slater was arrested and indicted in June of last year, and faces 10 years in prison for trying to go through with the plot. According to CBS Tampa Bay, he’s scheduled to be sentenced in September.
