A former intelligence community official testified on Wednesday (July 26) about the existence of a covert government program that handles crashed alien spacecraft, apparently confirming that aliens are real.

The confirmation came as the House Oversight Committee's national security subcommittee held a bipartisan hearing in which both parties expressed the need for transparency and clarity on unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, per ABC News.

David Grusch, a former member of a Pentagon office that investigated UAPs, said he was informed about a government program aiming to recover and reverse engineer alien spacecraft through his role, but wasn't given access to additional information.

"My testimony is based on information I've been given by individuals with a long-standing track record of legitimacy and service to this country, many of whom have shared compelling evidence in the form of photography, official documentation, and classified oral testimony to myself and many various colleagues," Grusch told lawmakers.

"I am asking Congress to hold our government to this standard and thoroughly investigate these claims," he continued. "But as I stand here under oath now I am speaking to the facts as I have been told them."

Last month, the Pentagon alleged it hadn't discovered "any verifiable information to substantiate" claims about crashed alien spacecraft.

Grusch, however, testified that he has met people with direct knowledge of non-human spacecraft.

The former intelligence community official declined to publicly identify those with firsthand knowledge and access to the alleged crashed alien spacecraft program. However, when asked who the committee should call to testify next, Grusch said he has a "cooperative and hostile list of individuals in the government who you should talk to."

Wednesday's hearing sent social media into a frenzy, with users sharing memes and voicing their opinions on aliens being real.
