The Colorado Supreme Court has barred former President Donald Trump from the state's ballots for the 2024 presidential election over his role in the January 6 insurrection of the U.S. Capitol.

In a historic 4-3 ruling, the court voted Tuesday (December 19) to bar Trump from appearing on the ballot, saying that Trump was disqualified from running for president under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution because he "engaged in insurrection," per CNBC.

“A majority of the court holds that President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution,” the majority wrote in the ruling. “Because he is disqualified, it would be a wrongful act under the Election Code for the Colorado Secretary of State to list him as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot."

Despite the ruling, Trump might be able to appear on the March 5 GOP primary ballot in Colorado. The Colorado Supreme Court paused the ruling from taking effect until January 4 leaving Trump room to ask the nation's highest court to overturn the decision.

Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, said in a statement" “This ruling, issued by the Colorado Supreme Court, attacks the very heart of this nation’s democracy. It will not stand, and we trust that the Supreme Court will reverse this unconstitutional order."

Social media users were quick to share their reactions to Trump being removed from the presidential ballot in Colorado. See their reactions below.
