Representation for Inter Milan star Romelu Lukaku says the soccer player was targeted with racial abuse and monkey noises during a match on Tuesday (April 4).
The alleged incident unfolded after Lukaku scored a goal to tie up a match against Juventus during the Coppa Italia semi-finals, per TMZ. Lukaku celebrated the goal by teasing opposing fans with a "be quiet" hand gesture. In response, Juventus fans hurled racist chants including monkey noises at the soccer star, according to Lukaku's reps.
A video posted on social media shows fans making noises toward the field.
Michael Yormark, president of Roc Nation Sports International which represents Lukaku, said the incident was "beyond despicable and cannot be accepted."
"Romelu scored a penalty late in the game. Before, during, and after the penalty, he was subjected to hostile and disgusting racist abuse. Romelu celebrated in the same manner he has previously celebrated goals."
Yormark said Juventus should apologize to Lukaku and the league should condemn fans involved in the incident.
"The Italian authorities must use this opportunity to tackle racism, rather than punish the victim of the abuse. I am certain that the footballing world shares the same sentiment."
