Over Memorial Day weekend, more than 50 people were shot in Chicago, and among those shootings, nine were fatal.

In the windy city, Memorial Day weekend is historically the beginning of violent summer months to come, per NBC5 Chicago. This past weekend's shootings significantly outpaced last year's Memorial Day weekend, which left three dead and 34 others injured.

Among the 50 people shot from Friday (May 27) to Tuesday (May 31), about half of the victims were found on Chicago's West Side. Four shooting victims were reported from Downtown Chicago, an area that has seen numerous high-profile attacks this month.

Reports say a 25-year-old man was killed in the latest shooting incident. On Monday (May 30) night, he and two others were shot on a sidewalk on East 93rd Street.

According to Chicago Police, the investigation is ongoing and no suspects are currently in custody for the shooting.

In a separate incident, another man, 27, was struck by gunfire multiple times on Monday and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

After a violent weekend in Chicago, Police Supt. David Brown is set to hold a press conference about public safety efforts on Tuesday (May 31).

The Chicago Police Department had previously canceled all of its officers' days off between May 24 to May 31 in anticipation of Memorial Day weekend.
