AM radio could soon remain a standard feature in every new vehicle sold in the United States, and National Association of Broadcasters Director of External Affairs DeMarius Love says it's about more than what's playing on the dial.
During a conversation with the Black Information Network at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference, Love discussed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, public safety and the importance of preserving access to free local broadcasting.
The U.S. House passed the bipartisan legislation on Monday (September 14). The bill would require automakers to include AM broadcast radio in new vehicles at no additional charge. The measure now awaits action in the Senate, where more than 60 senators have cosponsored the legislation.
Love emphasized AM radio's role during emergencies, including hurricanes, blizzards and widespread power outages, when internet and cellular service may be unavailable.
Broadcasters and emergency-management organizations supporting the legislation have similarly argued that AM radio provides a critical way to distribute emergency alerts and other information when communications infrastructure is disrupted. AM stations also provide local and in-language programming relied on by rural and diverse communities.
Some automakers have removed AM receivers from newer vehicles, particularly electric models, citing concerns including interference from electric motors. The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act was introduced in response to that trend.
Love also reflected on his own connection to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and how programs that provide students with professional experience, mentorship and financial support can help open doors for young people from underrepresented backgrounds.
With the House vote complete, NAB is now advocating for Senate passage of the bill. The legislation has support from a broad coalition of more than 125 organizations representing broadcasters, emergency managers, first responders and other groups.
