Texas Rep. Christian Menefee is looking ahead to what's next for Black representation in politics, technology and beyond.
During a conversation with Black Information Network's Vanessa Tyler at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference, Menefee reflected on representing Texas' 18th Congressional District and the legacy of leaders who came before him, including Barbara Jordan and Sheila Jackson Lee.
Menefee also addressed the Republican-led redistricting that placed him in a Democratic primary against longtime Rep. Al Green. Despite losing congressional seniority with Green's defeat, Menefee pointed to his previous work as Harris County attorney, where he mounted legal challenges against state and federal policies, as evidence of what he can accomplish in office.
The congressman also discussed engaging young voters, arguing that politicians should prioritize cultural authenticity over traditional political consulting. He highlighted his support for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico and his outreach to Black communities across Texas.
Menefee then turned to artificial intelligence, calling for a pause on the development of advanced AI while federal regulations catch up.
As a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Menefee raised concerns about AI safety and algorithmic bias against Black Americans. He argued that tech companies cannot be expected to regulate themselves and called for federal oversight that includes emergency safeguards.
Menefee also addressed challenges facing Black voices across media and corporate America, pointing to journalist Karen Attiah's firing and subsequent arbitration victory as part of what he views as a broader backlash against diversity initiatives and Black institutions.
He also previewed his work at ALC, including a panel focused on uplifting Black boys and young men.
