Rep. Summer Lee is calling for Black voters to reconnect with the movements that have historically pushed for change while challenging the role of money in American politics.
During a conversation with the Black Information Network at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference, the Pennsylvania Democrat discussed the Black radical tradition and its place in today's political landscape.
Lee defined being "radical" as challenging the status quo and expanding what people expect from public institutions. Addressing ideological divisions within the Democratic Party, she argued that progressive politics aren't new, pointing to leaders including Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois and Ella Baker and the movements they helped shape.
Lee also criticized the influence of wealth in politics, arguing that the cost of running for office can create significant barriers for working-class and Black candidates.
She pointed to the difference between limits on individual campaign contributions and the money that can flow through super PACs. During the 2025-26 election cycle, individuals can contribute up to $3,500 per election directly to a federal candidate, while super PACs can accept unlimited contributions to fund independent political spending.
Lee discussed several changes she supports to the campaign finance system, including her Abolish Super PACs Act, a constitutional amendment addressing the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, public campaign financing and stronger disclosure requirements.
She also encouraged voters to build collective political power within their own communities, arguing that grassroots organizing remains essential to challenging the influence of money in politics.
