Rep. Hank Johnson says the rising cost of living and growing concentration of wealth are putting increasing pressure on working families.
During a conversation with the Black Information Network's Vanessa Tyler at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 55th Annual Legislative Conference, the Georgia Democrat discussed the economy, artificial intelligence and concerns about the nation's democratic institutions.
Johnson pointed to the cost of fuel, groceries and housing as examples of the financial pressures facing Americans. Fuel prices have risen sharply amid disruptions tied to the ongoing conflict with Iran, with higher diesel costs also putting additional pressure on farmers and the food supply chain.
Johnson argued that the country's economic system has increasingly benefited wealthy individuals and corporations while leaving working people struggling to afford everyday expenses. He called for greater accountability and policies focused on lowering costs for families.
The congressman also raised concerns about political corruption and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence without sufficient safeguards.
Johnson currently serves as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet, where he has addressed issues involving AI, technology and government accountability.
Turning to upcoming elections, Johnson expressed concern about potential challenges to democratic processes and emphasized the importance of protecting the ability of voters to choose their representatives.
