Coronavirus Hospitalizations Climb To Record High

COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit Within A Houston Hospital Cares For Patients As Cases Continue To Rise

The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the United States stands at 73,014 as of Tuesday (November 17) morning, setting a new record as the number of cases continues to rise. Of those patients, more than 14,000 are in an intensive care unit, and over 4,100 are on ventilators, according to data collected by the COVID Tracking Project. Before November 10, the United States had not reported more than 60,000 hospitalizations in a single day during the pandemic.

Texas leads the nation with nearly 7,500 patients currently in the hospital, followed by Illinois, which has 5,500 patients hospitalized with the coronavirus.

The number of new patients has drastically increased over the past week, with an average of 3,500 patients per day being admitted to the hospital with COVID-19.

The U.S. reported an additional 166,000 new cases on Monday, bringing the total number to 11,047,064. The surge in cases was led by new daily records for cases in ten states, including Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Connecticut, and Vermont.

As hospital beds fill up, many states are putting new lockdown measures in place to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Health officials are worried the number of cases will spike even more in the coming weeks as people travel and attend Thanksgiving gatherings.
