Symone Sanders, Karine Jean-Pierre, and Ashley Etienne will be joining President-elect Joe Biden’s all-female senior communications team.
In a mold-breaking move, President-elect Biden hired seven women to make up the senior communications team of his incoming administration.
“Communicating directly and truthfully to the American people is one of the most important duties of a President, and this team will be entrusted with the tremendous responsibility of connecting the American people to the White House,” the president-elect said in a statement.
Sanders will serve as Senior Advisor and Chief Spokesperson for the Vice President. Etienne will take on the role of Communications Director for the Vice President and Jean-Pierre will serve as Principal Deputy Press Secretary.
The Biden-Harris transition account tweeted the appointment announcement on Sunday, November 29.
“These qualified, experienced communicators bring diverse perspectives to their work and a shared commitment to building this country back better,” he added in his statement.
Sanders has previously worked as a political commentator on CNN and was a senior advisor in Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign. She tweeted about her new role with Vice president-elect Kamala Harris.
Etienne joins the senior communications team after serving as a senior advisor on the Biden-Harris campaign. Vanity Fair called her “Biden’s deadliest weapon against Trump” in August and praised her for her role in being a key architect of Democrat’s messaging in the impeachment of Donald Trump.
Jean-Pierre was previously a senior advisor to Biden and chief of staff for Harris. She also served as the Southeast Regional Director in former President Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign in 2008.
Of the team, Vice president-elect Harris said, “Our country is facing unprecedented challenges...To overcome these challenges, we need to communicate clearly, honestly, and transparently with the American people, and this experienced, talented, and barrier-shattering team will help us do that.”
