Lil Nas X’s BET Awards performance on Sunday (June 27) sent the internet into eruption after ending his set with a steamy kiss with a backup dancer. The young rapper performed his chart-topping hit “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” donned in a costume that paid homage to Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time” music video, drawing criticism and support online.

Lil Nas X, an expert in clapbacks and viral tweets, addressed critics' remarks about his on-stage kiss.

“DONT USE AFRICAN CULTURE FOR SH** LIKE THIS!!!!!! RESPECT OUR ANCESTORS,” one person wrote in response to Lil Nas X’s performance.

“Y’all really like to pretend homosexuality didn’t exist in african culture,” the rapper responded. Lil Nas X sent multiple tweets addressing those who have a problem with his performances, too.

Aside from the critique, an outpouring of support for the performance came in from some big names in music and fans online.

“Lil Nas X did that!! Be fearless!!!” Diddy wrote.

The rapper, who came out during Pride Month in 2019, wasn’t nominated for a BET Award this year, which drew backlash from the "Old Town Road" creator’s fans who accused the show of being homophobic.
