School officials in Oregon revealed that a student was part of online chats where classmates were called derogatory comments and even racist and homophobic slurs, KATU reports.

The Newberg School District confirmed Friday (September 10) a student from Newberg High School participated in a Snapchat group called "slave trade." In this group, officials said the student posted photos of their classmates along with disparaging messages about them.

Some participants listed prices for students, while one comment said, "all blacks should die, let's have another holocaust." A few of them agreed with the measure.

District leaders say they found out about the online group after students reported it to them. The chat originated in Michigan last year and similar groups have popped up in Texas, too, reports say.

A letter was sent home with Newberg High School students Tuesday (September 14) addressing the issue. It read in part:

"We are deeply dismayed that this behavior and activity was exhibited by someone from our community. We condemn actions such as these which represent the antithesis of what we believe and where we stand as a Newberg Nation family. As a community, we continue to grapple with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging."

The school board has been at the center of a controversy after the board voted to ban political signs, including Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ pride flags. While the ban has not gone through pending legal review, Newberg School District has faced massive backlash over the decision.

There was a meeting Tuesday night where the ban on flags and the "slave trade" chat were discussed.
