States across the nation are holding primary elections on Tuesday (June 7) and kicking off some of the most highly-anticipated contests ahead of the midterms.

Here are some key races to watch in Iowa, California, and Montana.

Iowa

Senate Race

Former Rep. Abby Finkenaur is running for the Democratic nomination to unseat Republican U.S. Sen Chuck Grassley who's bidding for his eighth Senate term. While Grassley faces little GOP opposition, Finkenaur is up against retired Navy Adm. Mike Franken, a competitive fundraiser.

In an increasingly Republican-leaning state, Finkenaur would face a hard battle in the general election if she's able to secure the primary.

While Finkenauer is the Democratic front-runner, she would face an uphill general election race in a state that has become more of a Republican stronghold in recent years

3rd Congressional District

The House primary remains competitive as Republicans Nicole Hasso, Gary Leffler, and Zach Nunn vie for votes to take on Rep. Cindy Axne in the 3rd Congressional District.

California

Los Angeles Mayor's Race

The front-runners in the nonpartisan race to become LA's next mayor are Rep. Karen Bass, a longtime California politician who President Joe Biden considered as his running mate in 2020, and Rick Caruso, a billionaire real estate developer.

37th Congressional District

With Bass running for mayor, the 37th Congressional District has opened up and will likely seat another Democrat.

The longtime California politician and with many other Democrats have endorsed Sen. Sydney Kamlager. Kamlager is running against former Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry who has been backed by Maxine Walters.

Montana

1st Congressional District

A new congressional map in Montana has added a new western district for the first time in the state's history. It will likely seat a Republican in the House.

Trump-endorsed Ryan Zinke is the frontrunner against four other Republicans. However, controversy following Zinke may affect the race amid questions about the former secretary's Montana residency.
