Texas Southern University broke barriers at the 2023 National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) competition.

According to Sports Illustrated, the TSU cheerleading team swept the Cheer Spirit Rally Division l category at the annual NCA competition in Daytona Beach, Florida, making them the first HBCU to win a championship in the organization's 75-year history.

The Lady Tigers came out strong in the preliminary round of the competition, earning a 94.3 raw score. During the final round, the team topped their first raw score with a 96.1.

Head coach Shontrese Comeaux said she's "so proud" of the team and the program's growth.

"When I first came to TSU, I told the team we're going to Nationals. When we earned our gold bid at NCA Camp, I told the team, 'it's time to go to work.' I knew this was the year and the team to get the job done. I'm so proud of them and where we're going to take the cheer program next," Comeaux said in a statement.

Several other HBCUs showed out at the 2023 NCA competition and placed in their respective categories, including North Carolina A&T, Florida A&M University, Southern University, Jackson State University, Tennessee State University, and more.
