A Louisiana man has been charged in the shooting of a 14-year-old girl who was playing hide-and-seek on his property.

Officers from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office were responding to reports of a shooting in Starks, Louisiana on Sunday (May 7) when they found the teen with a gunshot wound, the Washington Post reports.

According to the sheriff's office, the girl was among a group of children that were playing hide-and-seek and hid on property belonging to 58-year-old David V. Doyle. Doyle told officers that he grabbed his gun after seeing “shadows outside his home.”

The 58-year-old said "he went back outside and observed people running away from his property, at which time he began shooting at them and unknowingly hit the girl" in the back of the head, according to the sheriff's office.

Following the shooting, the girl was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Doyle was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a firearm, and illegal discharge of a firearm. He remained in custody as of Tuesday (May 9) at the Calcasieu Correctional Center, with a bond set at $300,000.
