Culture's biggest night was full of surprises.

On Sunday (June 25), Teyana Taylor won Video Director of the Year at the 2023 BET Awards.

Taylor wasn't able to attend the awards show in person, but with the help of her mother, who accepted the accolade on the singer's behalf, she delivered one of the night's many surprises. After taking the stage, Taylor's mom went "off script" and video-called her daughter to accept her own award.

"Sorry BET." the mother said as she dialed her daughter on stage. Caught by surprise, Taylor asked her mom "What is happening?"

"You won," Taylor's mother explained, which prompted the award winner to jump out of her seat.

In her acceptance speech, Taylor attempted to share her gratitude, but her words were cut short by weak wifi on the phone.

Taylor was nominated for Video Director of the Year alongside A$AP Rocky, Benny Boom, Burna Boy, Cole Bennett, Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar, and Director X. This year's BET awards honored 50 years of hip-hop, featuring special performances from Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, Trina, Sugar Hill Gang, and more.
