Former LSU basketball star Danielle Ballard has died, according to NBC News. She was 29.

Ballard was hit by a vehicle on Thursday (July 13) at roughly 1:30 am in Memphis, Tennessee, according to police. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

LSU confirmed Ballard's death, saying the basketball star died in a "tragic accident."

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Danielle,” the university said in a statement. “She meant a great deal to our program and was such a big part of our women’s basketball family. It’s difficult to understand why this happened to someone who was so full of life and had so much promise.”

Ballard, who played guard for LSU from 2012 to 2015, was a "standout basketball player" who averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, according to the school. She helped lead LSU to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances and earned a spot on the SEC All-Defensive Team twice.

The driver of the vehicle, who hasn't been named, stayed at the scene after the incident, according to police. An investigation remains ongoing.
