An unarmed Black man was brutally attacked by a police dog after he surrendered during an arrest in Ohio.

According to the Scioto Valley Guardian, the incident unfolded by the side of the road in Pickaway County, Ohio following a high-speed police chase.

Video obtained by the local outlet shows the driver standing outside of his vehicle with his hands in the air. The man follows an officer's command to approach before Circleville Police Department's K-9 unit arrives at the scene.

In the video, a trooper can be heard instructing the unit to not release the dog while the suspect is complying.

"Do not release the dog with his hands up," the trooper said.

Despite the trooper's orders, an officer, identified as Ryan Speakman, unleashes the dog while the suspect is on his knees with his hands in the air.

The man can be heard screaming in pain as the police K-9 bites him and drag him down onto the median. Troopers tried to intervene and yelled at Speakman to "remove the dog" as it continued to brutally attack the man.

The suspect was reportedly hospitalized before being taken to the county jail where he is facing charges of running from police.

It's unclear whether Speakman or the K-9 are still on duty. According to the Scioto Valley Guardian, the department determined that excessive force wasn't used in the arrest following an internal investigation.
